The Dumpcar DC-5 is a vehicle on the chassis of the Tatra 147 E with three axles, with an air-cooled diesel engine. It has a tip-up platform with a 5 m3 volume and a protection shield above the driver's cabin.
The Dumpcar is designed to transport rocks, soil and any loose materials. It's able to work off-road and with its short distance between axles' centers it's good for work in limited space.
This is an excerpt from a manual published by PPS Detva, i.e. producer of this very interesting vehicle.
Why a mysterious legend?
Tatra 147 was working throughout whole Czechoslovakia. You could probably find them in every quarry or a bigger construction site and some even appeared in China.
We do not know how many were actually built, nor when the production started and finished. A few pictures were preserved but not one vehicle.
There's also a big question how many different types were produced, especially the platform part.
In one quarry in northern Bohemia a few Tatra 147s worked. One Saturday afternoon the drivers parked the vehicles as usual and went home. During the night there was a terrible cloud burst. On Monday morning the pit was completely under water - and it still is! The problem is that no one remembers where the quarry exactly was. It may sound ridiculous but in that area there are 40 places like that. So much for the legend.
On Sunday, February 18, 2002 an exhibition of Tatra 147 DC 5 took place after a perfect and complete renovation.
We can only congratulate its owner on the perfect job he did and also envy him a little.
This Tatra 147 DC 5 is most likely the only one in former Czechoslovakia.
